How it all started...
Darren Shipman is celebrating 30 remarkable years at the helm of Dpix, marking a journey defined by innovation, passion, and a visionary embrace of change. His career began in a professional photographic laboratory, where for six years he produced high end colour prints for advertising photographers. This early chapter laid a strong technical understanding and established his commitment to quality.
Soon after, Darren expanded his horizons by assisting at a large advertising studio in Highgate, Birmingham, for 18 months. Immersed in the fast-paced world of creative production, he refined his skills and built a network that would serve him well in future endeavors. His next step was a rewarding seven-year stint as a photographer at a respected Redditch studio, where he captured an array of assignments that showcased his versatility and keen eye for detail.
...and then came Dpix
In 1995, Darren founded Dpix—and just three years later, in 1998, he was joined by Julie King, whose many years of experience as a photographer brought fresh perspective and additional expertise to the business. Together they embraced the digital revolution over 20 years ago, seamlessly transitioning from film to digital photography and ensuring Dpix remained at the forefront of both technological and creative advances.
Today, their expansive portfolio is a testament to that adaptability. From sumptuous food shots and sleek vacuum cleaners to the unexpected artistry of coffins and car photography, they’ve photographed nearly every subject imaginable. Their work even spans school prospectus pages, elaborate room sets, everyday nuts and bolts, and high-value art pieces crafted in the shape of handbags.
Few can claim such breadth of experience serving designers and advertising agencies—there is very little that hasn’t passed through the combined lenses of Darren and Julie.
