Booking a photographer for a commercial photo-shoot is about much more than contacting the first name that comes on a Google search. Here are some handy tips:
1. Do your research
Sound familiar? That’s because it is the right thing to do. Don’t just book any old (or young) photographer. Check them out online to make sure they can supply what you need.
2. Be specific
You can look for commercial, advertising, brochure, website or industrial photographers. Trouble is, there will be lots of them. So how do you know if they are any good? You need to look in depth at their past work to make sure they can supply what you need. If it is likely to be specialist work, book an expert photographer in that field.
3. Take a closer look at their website
If a photographers’ website shows mainly people and weddings, they may lack commercial experience. Many wedding photographers, for instance, aspire to commercial work and will claim they can do it – but you may be taking risk by hiring them if they can’t do the job.
4. Put them under the spotlight
Does their website show signs of expertise in commercial photography? Remember, their website should display their best work – so be critical. If the photography is studio work, look closely at shadows, reflections and highlights. Does it reveal skill and talent? If you are uncertain about the quality of their work they may not be a good fit for you.
5. Try before you buy
Does the website show images similar to those you want? If not, it doesn’t mean they can’t do the work – it may be that they’ve selected other types of work to show. However, you will need assurance they can do the job before booking them. You can ask to see specific samples. Some photographers may even offer to take a test shot for you. There may be a charge for this (we all have a living to earn) but at least you can try before you buy and if you like the results and commission them, you can expect a discount your final bill.
6. Pick up the phone and ask some questions
Photographers tend to be a friendly lot. We’re usually are happy to have a chat with prospective clients and offer the option for you to drop in to view our facilities/studio. If a photographer is reluctant – this may flag up some warning signs!
