How to Get School Prospectus Photography Right

School Photography | Children in Classroom

School prospectus photography is one of the most rewarding — and most demanding — briefs we work on. The stakes are high: these images help parents decide where to send their children. They need to feel authentic, warm, and genuinely representative of what that school is. And every school is different.

Here are the things we’ve learned from years of working with nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools, colleges, and universities.

Every school needs different photography

The most common mistake in school photography is treating every establishment the same way. A nursery and a sixth form college are aiming for completely different audiences with completely different emotional triggers. But even within similar types of school, the differences matter.

Before any shoot, we read the school’s values statement and spend time understanding what makes them distinctive — whether that’s exceptional music provision, strong vocational links with local employers, a particular sporting culture, or something else entirely. That specificity is what separates a prospectus that resonates from one that could belong to any school.

Capture the learning, not just the learners

Posed groups of students staring at a camera tell the viewer very little. What parents want to see is activity — students engaged in something, interacting with each other, being genuinely absorbed in what they’re doing. Those are the images that feel true, and truth is what builds trust.

That means working quickly and quietly, anticipating moments rather than manufacturing them, and giving students enough space to forget the camera is there.

Don’t forget the social side

Academic achievement matters, but parents also want to know their children will be happy. Lunch tables, corridors between lessons, sports, clubs, friendships — the social fabric of a school is as important to prospectus photography as the classroom. Make sure it’s represented.

Include teachers — but carefully

Teaching staff are a significant part of what a school is selling, and images of teachers genuinely interacting with students are powerful. Not everyone is comfortable in front of a camera, so it’s worth identifying willing participants in advance rather than surprising anyone on the day.

Reflect the full diversity of the student body

Prospectus images need to be genuinely inclusive — reflecting the real mix of students at the school. This isn’t just good practice, it’s essential for prospective parents and students who need to see themselves represented.
