Bringing Brands to Life Through Photography: The dpix Journey Over 30+ Years

Bringing Brands to Life Through Photography

The dpix Journey

30+ Years of Change, Craft and Creativity

Photography has changed dramatically over the last three decades, and so have we.

dpix creative photography was founded by Darren in 1995, at a time when photography was entirely film based and every frame counted. Julie joined the business in 1998, and together they have spent more than 30 years building dpix into a respected commercial photography studio.

From the early days of 5″x 4″ large format and medium format film, hand mixed chemicals and darkroom processing, through to today’s professional digital mirrorless systems, dpix has continually evolved by adapting to new technology, changing brands and shifting visual trends.

What has never changed is our focus on brand led photography. Every image we create is designed with purpose, consistency and commercial impact in mind, helping businesses connect with their audience through strong visual storytelling.

The evolution of an era: The dpix creative photography's journey from the precision of large-format film to the dawn of the digital age.

From Film to Digital and Everything In Between

When dpix began, photography was a very different craft. Darren and Julie worked with 5″x4″ large format film and medium format cameras, carefully composing each frame. Polaroid tests were taken,  chemicals were mixed by hand, film was processed in the darkroom, and transparencies were developed in house so Dpix had total control of their transparencies. It was a slow, highly skilled process where every shot truly mattered.

As technology evolved, so did we. We transitioned from film to early digital systems that were very expensive and quite inferior, now we work with high end digital mirrorless cameras. Today, files are carefully processed and edited digitally, but the core principles remain exactly the same: light, composition and attention to detail.

Studios That Evolved With Us

For many years, dpix operated from a 1,500 square foot commercial studio in Bromsgrove industrial estates, supporting a wide range of commercial photography projects.

In 2013, we took an exciting step forward by moving house and designing our own purpose built photography studio in our garden, located just two miles from M5 Junction 5. This bespoke space allows us to work flexibly across food, product, brand and commercial shoots, while offering clients a relaxed and professional experience.
