Kitchen Craft is one of the UK’s largest kitchenware companies, and when they came to us to photograph several new product ranges for their seasonal marketing campaigns, it was the kind of brief we relished. Multiple ranges, each with a distinct identity, each needing a different creative approach.
What the project demonstrated well is how a single, well-planned photography commission can generate a full bank of images for use across the entire year. Here’s a look at how we approached each range.
Calico — high-key studio
The Calico range centred on wooden chopping boards and kitchen tools with a clean, natural aesthetic. We kept the studio lighting high-key — bright, minimal shadows — to complement the simple, honest feel of the products. Sometimes less is more.
Seafarer — Lyme Regis harbour
For a range called Seafarer with explicitly nautical references, the right location was obvious. We took the products to Lyme Regis harbour, supplementing the ambient coastal light with flash to give a sun-lit feel. No studio set could have given these images the authenticity that the real harbour did.
Butterfly Lane — English country garden
This afternoon tea range needed an outdoor garden setting — something quintessentially English. We didn’t need to travel far; the right location was close to home. We shot in natural light, supplemented with flash to give that warm afternoon sun quality that the brief called for.
Christmas range — warm and domestic
The Christmas products were shot in a country cottage setting to capture the feeling of Christmas at home. Shortbread on a plate, warm tungsten tones, nothing overly polished — the brief was about feeling cosy rather than looking pristine. Lighting temperature does a lot of the creative work in shots like this.
Across all the ranges, the constant was close collaboration with the Kitchen Craft team during the planning stage — understanding not just what they wanted in the frame, but what feeling each range was meant to evoke. That’s what allowed us to give each one a genuinely distinct look.
